California LGBTQ Youth Report

Population Focus: LGBTQ Youth

This report is based on 2017 survey responses from 1,700 California-based LGBTQ youth. One finding reported that 36% of LGBTQ youth in California rate coming out as LGBTQ to their parents as extremely stressful. To address the issues facing LGBTQ youth, California has passed several laws designed to explicitly protect LGBTQ students and to provide guidance on compliance. However, some districts may be unaware of current legal requirements or could still be in the process of updating policies and procedures concerning LGBTQ inclusion.
