The objective of this study was to determine whether the social environment surrounding LGB youth may contribute to their higher rates of suicide attempts. The authors found that LGB youth were significantly more likely to attempt suicide in the previous year (21.5% versus 4.2%), and that a more supportive social environment was significantly associated with fewer suicide attempts, controlling for individual-level risk factors.
